Another area of serious concern to the Institute is the delivery of qualitative community health care to the masses of the people towards alleviating the agony and difficulties of meeting health care needs.
Towards actualising this objective, the Institute has over the last twenty years established several rural health centres, primary, preventive healthcare programmes, maternities and a specialist hospital that deliver ready and affordable health care services to the people who are saved the pains of traveling long distances to receive preventive and curative treatment for common ailments such as malaria, water borne diseases, infections and organic ailments.
The Institute built or supported from the beginning the funding and equipping of some specific projects with communities to materialize the following hospital; Ntasi Obi Ndi Nonafuf Specialist Hospital Trans-Ekulu, Enugu, Aru Ike Ndi Oria Health Centre Akegbe Ugw, Ezeawanyi Nke Udo Health Centre Ugwu Omu Nike, Ukamaka Health Centre Akakwume Nze, Nne Nke Ebere Health Centre Akama Oye.
Otheres are Saint Clara Health Centre Umana-Ndiagu, Inye Aka Ndi Otu Kristi Health Centre Etiti Obele Agu, Mother of Mercy Hospital Ngwo, Saint Anthony Hospital Mgbowo and over twenty health out posts some of which include; All Hallows Maternity located at Ngwo, Iva-Valley Enugu, Akpugo Nkanu and Agba Umana.
Achi Joint Hospital, Achi, Oji River and the Bishop Shanahan Hospital Nsukka were partly equipped by the institute.
The Catholic hospital at Adani was built in 1982 by Bishop Michael Eneja with the priestly ordination monetary gift presented to Obiora Ike by the Diocese of Feldlinch, Austria.
Most of these hospital’s funding support were from SIM Germany, GTZ Germany, Augsbury Germany, Deutschordens Cologne, Germany, Joseph Troisdorf Hospital Germany, Saint Poelten Hospital Austria and Misereor Aachen.
Health stations coordinated by the Institute and spread across the former three deaneries of the Catholic Diocese of Enugu boast about three hundred health personnel who make health care service accessible to over one million people in the rural and urban areas of Enugu State.
In 1995, the Institute through the support of the diocese of Poelten, Austria and Frau Antonia Reikersdorfer built a full-fledged specialist hospital known as Ntasi Obi Ndi Nonafufu Specialist Hospital which offers divers medical services.
CIDJAP primary healthcare programme has reached more than sixty communities within its locations of four health centres spread across Enugu State.
The community health centres located at Akegbe Ugwu covers more than twelve communities, the centre at Akpakwume and Nze respectively cover sixteen and twelve commiunities, while the centre at Ugwuomu Nike covers twenty communities.
The people of the above named communities enjoy regular hospital, primary healthcare and maternity services in the areas of;
- Health education
- HIV/AIDS awareness and treatment
- Maternal and childcare
- Family planning
- Essential drugs and food/water supply
- Treatment of minor ailments and dental care
- Mental Health and domestic accident prevention
- Prevention and treatment of endemic diseases
- Environmental and occupational health
At the centres, operated twenty-hours with resident doctors, holistic care is given to both the rich and poor in the rural areas. Exclusive breast feeding is encouraged and carried out thereby using natural feeding that everyone rural person can afford.
The Neighborhood Foundation with links in the parishes, zones, deaneries, and organizations if the Catholic Diocese of Enugu, has been empowering the youths and creating awareness on HIV/AIDS and dangers of the disease and risk behaviours.
