Our Activities

Our Services

The year 1999 for CIDJAP was a year of involvement in numerous activities, strategizing, action plan, project implementation overall coordination and moving the CIDJAP forward with zeal and result. There has been a lot of impact, need assessment and objective relevance in our activities in relation to our set out mission and aims.

1. Sustainability:

Over the years the CIDJAP through the financial assistance of our donor Agencies, and local contributions has executed several projects. 30% of these projects are now sustainable. Particular to note is the end result of run micro credit schemes and soft loans, namely the small projects fund (SPF); the Grass Root Women Empowerment Development Education (GWEDE) and the (SEPTA) The loan schemes are revolving and the recipients are growing from strength to strength The hospitals and other health centres are growing to sustainable functionability. The Justice and Peace Farms are seeking ways not only to sustain itself but also to maintain a solid Agro rich base and extend support and expertise to local farmers in the communities.

2. Educational Impact:

In Nigeria where education is grounded and malfunctional CIDJAP stands at the fore-front to promote the intellectual emancipation of the human person and to fight against incessant strikes in schools. In affiliation with other notable institutes of higher learning CIDJAP now offers three diploma programmes:

* Diploma in Religious Studies in Affiliation with the University of Nigeria Nsukka;
* Diploma in Human Rights in Affiliation with the Enugu State University of Science and Technology;
* Diploma in Catholic Social Teachings/Theology for Lay People in Affiliation with the University of Bonn, Germany.

Plans are underway to complete the affiliation processes in Social work with the relevant department and unit of the university of Nigeria Nsukka Our training programmes for men -the Oluaka Di Mma Vocational and Technical Training Centre and the women counter-part the Nazareth Skills Centre are geared toward self-employment and personal sustainability Most young people now go to school and upon graduation gain self employment.

3. Gender:

We believe that all human beings are created equal before God and made in same dignity and worth We therefore pursue equal participation of all peoples and equal opportunities and exposition without discrimination colour, sex, age, religion, nationality etc The management of CIDJAP therefore ensures equal participation and involvement of persons in our projects and promotes a viable option to the larger 'world. There is increased participation of women in cultural feast, civil activities and religious functions Most men are now more tolerable of the women folk.

4. Youth and Children:

CIDJAP over the years through its awareness campaigns, workshops and sensitisation programmes has provided direction and alternative options to many of our Nigerian Youth who are either stranded, lacking in vision and mission and near collapse under pain of frustration, Teenage Pregnancy and unwanted birth receive primary attention under this scheme. The CIDJAP Youth Counselling Office within the year under review assisted over 200 Youth who are in disarray of various kinds. The result is great the impact relevant and the task on-going Many displaced children, abandoned, abused and neglected by family members and society have found rescue and comfort under the CIDJAP umbrella Our motherless babies home, home for displaced persons, caritas office, counselling and support outfit are full of success stories in the implementation of this agenda There has been noticeable reduction in the number of teenage pregnancy and majority of our youth are now masters of their own destiny. Child abuse has remarkable reduced.

5. Attitude Change:

There has been improved noticeable change in the behavioural life of our citizens. Majority of our people who otherwise would remain unemployed and thus enlist in cultism, robbery, pick pocket, 419 and other sorts of duping are now members of the responsible society The story is also true of our young girls many of whom could have taken to prostitution and Commercial sex. Empowerment opportunities offered by our educational linkages, skills acquisition centres and micro credit revolving scheme is a boast in the context of influencing positively the General attitude of our people.

6. Relevance to Health:

The extension of primary health care and establishment of community health centres by CIDJAP have contributed in the empowerment of the life of our people, the reduction of mortality rate and rapid response control of many diseases especially the scourge of HIV/AIDS There has been notable increase in child and material care, reproductive health and the general health condition of our people. In many cases medical services are rendered at less than cost prices Sequel to our health services, communities are now given more attention to the urgent issues of sanitation, care of the Environment and support to the Eco-systems. The villages have witnessed great health care delivery with the result that: there is decrease in mortality rate: longer, happier and healthier life.

7. Societal Impact:

The Society which we serve are the most benefited There is clear improvement in the areas of education, health; water; agriculture and general development. We recommit ourselves to move our society forward for the common progress of humanity.

FUTURE ACTIVITIES

The Catholic Institute for Development, Justice and Peace and Caritas is a gift to the Church of Enugu, Nigeria and Africa in general.

With the eyes of Faith:
Everything is a gift;
Every gift is a call;
Every call is an opportunity;
Every opportunity is a challenge;
Every challenge is a cross;
And the cross is victory.

Our future priorities include:-

1. The renewed consolidation of our spiritual, intellectual, educational, technical, material and social activities in the service of Evangelisation in Nigeria in the areas already begun since the last decade with a view to a continuation of same on a more efficient level for the promotion of Justice, Peace, Development and Charity as contained in our aims and objectives.

2. The improvement and expansion of our solidarity network and coalition systems worldwide in order to maintain an active Christian presence in the world especially among poor and marginalised groups involved in struggles for social, cultural, economic and political justice. CIDJAP in the next years intends to cultivate new friends at all levels and intensify old friendships in order to actually become "the voice of the voiceless " in our environment.

3. By providing opportunities for the Christian faithful to become actively involved in promoting the Social Teachings of the Church in state and society, CIDJAP shall develop positions that both critique and advocate alternatives regarding major issues affecting church and society, faith and life, Justice and Peace in Nigeria particularly and, Africa in general.

4. Create and intensify research priorities following the guidelines of the Pontifical document "Ecclesia in Africa" 1995 (Pope John Paul 11) which seeks to develop an educational strategy that empowers simple people to take their destiny in their hands, promote economic justice for all, advocate global economic restructuring based on Justice, Peace and Community harmony, encourage just and sustainable alternatives in social policy and continue the prophetic, teaching and leading functions of the church in a confused and materialistic world to which we have been called to witness to Christ, in our neighbour. The goal is to champion integral development, justice and peace.

5. Our practical projects in the areas of rural and community development, education and awareness programmes, health, sanitation, water, ecology, credit revolving scheme, women, youth, career and skills development, Human Rights; Prisoners' Welfare Schemes; Caritas; Sponsorship Programmes; Agriculture, etc., shall be given added impetus to achieve long-term multiplier and local power, with the initiatives moving over to the individuals and communities directly involved in the process of planning, financing, executing and controlling their own destinies.
